The Submariner 5512 was the first Rolex diver with crown guards, a feature that set the template for every Sub that followed. This particular 1966 example has a “Bart Simpson” dial, named for the cartoonish crown logo that looks like the character’s spiky hair. These gilt dials were only made for a short window in the 60s, and the four-line chronometer text tells you this one has the higher-spec movement. The glossy black finish with gold printing catches light in a way that later matte dials just can’t match.
A 1966 Rolex Submariner 5512 with a rare gilt ‘Bart Simpson’ dial. The zinc sulfide lume on the dial and hands is original and matches nicely. Fitted with a Mark 2 bezel insert and a USA rivet bracelet dated 1977. The movement has been serviced and is running with a healthy power reserve. Comes with its Rolex box.
